Kids Climbing – A Guide for Parents

Bringing kids climbing at Red Spider is super easy, but there are a bunch of different options to choose from. We’ve put together this handy guide below to help you:

Castle & Pirate Ship

Our Kids Castle & Pirate Ship is one of the best things we offer to introduce kids to climbing! It’s a great play area, filled with tunnels, slides and small climbing walls. We recommend bringing kids here first before trying the rest of the centre, as it introduces them to the atmosphere and the sport of climbing itself through play!

Coaching & Taster Sessions

If your children have climbed before (either in our Castle area or elsewhere) and you want to give them a more in-depth climbing experience, our coached sessions are the perfect next step! We’ve got tons of options to suit each individual or family:

Creepy Crawlies: This hour long session is for 4-7 year olds, and is coached by one of our fantastic instructors. The aim of this session is to give the kids a great experience of climbing, boosting their confidence in a fun-focused and relaxed environment.

Arachnids: This hour long session is for 7-13 year olds, but has the same premise as Creepy Crawlies.

Bouldering Taster: A session for the whole family! Get a great introduction to bouldering in this fun, fully supervised session.

Termly Clubs!

If your kids have done a taster, or have played in our Castle area before, and want to climb more regularly, our termly clubs are the best option! Check out this page on our website to find out more!

Parent Supervision

If you have climbed before, and would consider yourself experienced enough to climb unsupervised, you can supervise your children in the climbing areas yourself! All we ask is that you follow the supervision rules (below) to help us keep everyone safe.

Supervision Rules:

  1. At Red Spider, we allow experienced climbers to supervise 2 novices per day.
  2. When you arrive at the Centre, we will check you in and ask you, as the supervisor, to sign in any novices you are looking after. You will be responsible for, and stay with, your novice climbers for the entirety of your visit.
  3. They will need to do a Novice Registration Form before climbing here. (If you are supervising any under-18s, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for completing a registration form.)

Not Competent Yet?

If you would like to become an experienced climber, able to supervise others, all you need to do is take part in a Bouldering Taster Session to learn how to navigate the bouldering areas safely. On your next visit after completing the Bouldering Taster Session, we’ll give you a very quick safety test, and sign you off as experienced. It’s super easy – don’t let the word ‘test’ scare you!

Over 14’s Unsupervised Climbing

Once kids have reached age 14, we allow them to take a Youth Access Test. Upon passing this test, they may use the centre without the supervision of a parent or instructor.

The test is 30 minutes long, and participants will be tested on their bouldering knowledge and skills.
