Why AMREF?
AMREF (the African Medical and Research Foundation) is Africa’s leading health charity.
AMREF started life in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa and have over 55 years experience working with the most marginalised and vulnerable communities across sub-Saharan Africa to create lasting health change.
Beginning with aeroplanes, to provide the most remote communities with health care, they have always used the ‘tools of our time’ to bridge the gap between heath systems and people.
Today they use e-learning, telemedicine, and mobile phones to spread health knowledge and care. Their work has won high-profile international awards such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Award for Global Health and the Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Award.
In 2011, AMREF brought better health to 12 million people across Africa.

About “Stand Up for African Mothers”
AMREF believes in a future where no woman should die giving birth; a future where African women have access to at least basic health care during pregnancy and childbirth. That’s why AMREF launched its first global campaign, Stand Up for African Mothers.
AMREF’s Stand Up for African Mothers campaign aims to train 15,000 African midwives by 2015. A skilled AMREF-trained midwife can care for 500 women. The healthcare that women in the developed world take for granted are all great luxuries in Africa.
As a result, women in sub-Saharan Africa face an adult lifetime risk of 1 in 39 of dying from pregnancy or childbirth related causes, compared to a low risk of 1 in 3,800 for developed countries.
