Weekly Climbing Lessons for Kids | Join Now!

Our weekly climbing lessons for kids aged 7-17 are a great way to get involved with the growing sport and are delivered under a national scheme called NICAS! (National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme)

Has your child ever expressed an interest in climbing?

Perhaps you have joined us for a taster session, or they have tried climbing through school? These are weekly 90-minute lessons where our qualified and experienced coaches deliver climbing sessions. The classes are delivered to small groups (up to 6) in a safe environment where young climbers can learn how to climb using technical skills in a fun way!

Climbing provides immense benefits: challenge for the mind, developing problem solving skills, mental health benefits, boosting focus, improving decision making, building confidence and loads more. Our NICAS programme is designed to grow independence, build communication, make friends, overcome challenges and provide a sense of achievement through a physical activity.

Here at Green Spider, we aim to develop climbers through quality coaching and our NICAS instructors meet the defined levels of training. Climbing by nature involves some risk, however we are committed to safety. Our coaching staff have completed specific training and/or hold relevant Mountain training qualifications.

What does NICAS involve?

NICAS is delivered through 5 different levels:

Level 1 New climber: Level 1 introduces beginners to roped climbing and bouldering and recognises their ability to climb safely under supervision.

Level 2 Foundation Climber: Aimed at promoting good practise in climbing and bouldering unsupervised on artificial walls

Level 3 Technical Climber: Focuses on developing technique and movement skills. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills to climb safely at any climbing facility and climb in a responsible manner. Achievement at this level is broadly equivalent to a pass at GCSE.

Level 4 Lead Climber: Concentrating on the skills required to lead climb proficiently. Aimed at developing a self-motivated climber who has a wide range of skills and has reached a high level of competence, with a desire to progress by identifying and setting goals.

Level 5 Advanced Climber: This top-level award focuses on improving performance, including creating a personal training programme and experience of local and national competitions as well as exploring the wider world of climbing

In each level, participants tick off a variety of targets in their NICAS logbooks under the guidance of their instructor. Once all of the targets have been met, they’ll progress to the next level and earn a certificate! Some levels take longer to complete than others, and it’s best not to rush through the levels. We want all of our climbers to have a really good base understanding of all the skills we teach them.

How can I book?

We run NICAS termly, typically running January-March, April-July and September-December respectively. If you want to find out more about NICAS, or want to book, you can visit THIS PAGE on our website, or get in touch!
