We are so excited to ring in the new year! We know that many of you will be setting goals or thinking up resolutions to work towards in 2024, so we’ve put together a handy guide for those of you who have decided to learn a new skill (and have chosen climbing!) or who want to improve their climbing!
Learning To Climb
We have a few different options for those of you who are taking the leap and want to learn to climb this year. First, you’ll need to decide where you want to start: Bouldering or Ropes?
Bouldering is low level climbing, without ropes. There’s padded matting beneath you, and you’ll only ever climb to a maximum of 4 metres from the floor! The joy of bouldering is in the problem solving; working out how to solve the boulder problem and get to the top of the wall.
There’s two ways to get into Bouldering at Blue Spider:
1 – Watch our Bouldering Induction Video. This video was filmed at White Spider, but all of the safety rules apply here too. Once you’ve watched the video, our reception team will test your knowledge to make sure you know how to keep yourself save, and that’s it! You’re ready to take on the world of bouldering at Blue Spider! We hire out chalk bags and climbing shoes for a small fee, so you don’t even need to purchase any gear of your own to begin with.
2 – Boulder Induction: For those of you who would prefer some instruction in person on the walls with one of our instructors – the Boulder Induction was made for you! This 30 minute induction session covers your registration to the centre, entry for the entire day, and climbing shoe hire as well as the instruction! You’ll learn how to boulder safely, and how to supervise other novice climbers!
Most of our centre is for climbing with ropes, so to take advantage of all we have to offer, you’ll need to know how to use them! Our Beginners Courses will give you all of the necessary skills to climb on your own and join us as a member. You’ll learn how to tie your own knots, fit all of the necessary safety equipment correctly, and how to belay! The Beginners Course will also cover use of the Bouldering areas and the Auto-Belays, so you’ll have tons of options for climbing once you’ve completed it.
Improving Your Climbing
If you’ve already got the basics down, and you’re looking at taking the next step in your climbing journey or want to improve – we’ve got you covered!
Our instructors are always super keen to coach climbers who want to learn techniques or need some help to reach the next climbing grade! If you want some personalised climbing coaching to help you to reach your goals, a Private Coaching Session is for you! These sessions can be 1:1, or you can bring a friend or two! Our instructors will tailor the session to your wants and needs, so it’s completely up to you how you use their time.
Alternatively, why not Learn to Lead Climb? This is the natural next step for any climber who already knows and is confident on a top rope, or for someone who is looking to start learning how climbing outside works.
If you have any questions about any of the above, or simply want to talk to someone about how best to start your climbing journey, get in touch! Our reception team are super knowledgeable, and are always happy to help!
